Various articles of embroidery needle work such as clothing, religious objects and other household items have been a mark of wealth and status in many cultures. There was a kind of work termed as art needle work which was a type of surface embroidery and was popular in the later nineteenth century.
Embroidery needle work has a lot many forms and it is not concentrated in terms of materials etc. there is also machine embroidery which is created using a specialized machine that can read a computerized design to automatically create a stitch design. Embroidery work is somewhat not related to cross stitch as it is a slightly different concept. There is one thing in common between these two and that is the creation of beautiful and marvelous designs with the help of colorful threads. Embroidery needle work is classified according to its use of the underlying foundation fabric. These styles are also categorized according to the relationship of stitch placement to the fabric.
There are generally few categories in which it is differentiated as: the first and the foremost is the free embroidery needle work and these designs are applied without regard to the weave of the underlying fabric. Another type of very popular embroidery is the counted thread in which the patterns are created by making stitches over a fabric. There is a second division that classifies embroidery needle work according to whether the design is stitched on top of or through the foundation fabric. Under this category it is divided in the surface embroidery and the canvas work.
Surface embroidery is as well developed as cross stitch and for this particular type the patterns are worked over the top of the fabric with decorative stitches. Whereas on the other hand in canvas embroidery work the threads are stitched through a fabric resulting in creation of a dense pattern. There is another type of embroidery work which is said to be the costliest of all and that is the hand embroidery. It is costly as it requires skilled labor and lot of hard work and concentration. This skill is passed form generation to generation and is still in great demand.
Embroidery stitches are the smallest units in embroidery, embroidery patterns are formed by doing many embroidery stitches, either all the same or different ones. So this art of embroidery needle work is as evergreen and ever and its charm will never fade away.
