Knitting Needles
A knitting needle is a long stick or rod used as a tool in the manufacturing of hand knitted fabric. It has also been called as the knitting sticks, knitting wires or simple wires or rods as they are made up of steel. These knitting needles are used in knitting stitch but a very simple requirements for them is that they should be smooth, thin and long enough to reach through a stitch and it should be strong enough not to break while manipulating the bight of yarn. They are commonly used in pairs and are the only very essential components used in knitting stitch.
The most widely recognized form of knitting needle was probably invented in the mid of 19th century and are usually called straight needles. These kinds of needles are narrowed to a point at one end and capped at the other with a knob or a head. The straight needles are specifically used to knit flat two-dimensional fabrics like squares and rectangles. The oldest known knitting needles are still very common and they are double pointed needles as they are tapered on both the ends to points. It does not have its one end capped with a knob. It is generally used to knit tubular fabrics such as socks, sleeves of sweaters etc. Another basic knowledge about double pointed needles is that they were used in sets of four or five. There are also circular needles available and both tubular and flat knitting is also done on them. As there are a wide variety of knitting needles in terms of shapes and sizes but all of them are used for some or the other specific formations.
Along with these important tools for hand knitting there are some other things that is to be kept in mind for these knitting needles. The clarity in your hand knitting not only depends upon the quality of yarn but it also depends on certain other factors such as the quality and the type of knitting needles. When we are taking about the type of the needle then it is a must to explain the needle gauge as it is the only thing that makes it possible to determine the size of a knitting needle. Generally the sizes are written on them. Needle gauges are often made up of plastic or metal but is not specified as they can be of any material. They tend to be about 3 by 5 inches.
Basically your style of knitting and the type of yarn determines the quality of a knitting needle. This is the reason why they should be selected with great care. If you tend to be a tight knitter a needle with a long, thin tapered point could be the best option. Points that are very sharp tend to split the yarn and drag against the other needle while knitting which makes knitting go slower. The knitting needle that will be best for you also depends upon the material by which the needle is made. So you should a select a needle tip to match up with your style and yarn to give that clarity and perfect look to your knitting stitch.
